Looking after your dentures.

Simple daily care, and when to ask for help.

Your daily routine

  • Clean morning and night using the method recommended for your denture material. Rinse after meals.
  • Handle over a folded towel or basin of water to protect it if dropped.
  • Remove at night unless your dental professional advises otherwise.
  • Keep regular dental checks, even if you have no natural teeth.

If the fit changes

New dentures can take practice with eating and speech, and may need adjustments.

Contact us if your denture rubs, feels sharp, loosens, cracks or changes your bite. Do not force it into place, glue, file, heat or reshape it. Adhesive should not hide poor fit or ongoing soreness.

When to get dental help

See a dentist for pain, swelling, bleeding, persistent ulcers or lumps, mouth injuries, or concerns about natural teeth or implants.

For urgent dental concerns, contact a dentist or NHS 111. Serious face or jaw injuries, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or difficulty breathing need A&E or 999.
